Are you a good listener?
Almost everyone *thinks* they are.
But many experts say we’re experiencing a “crisis in listening.”
According to a survey by Psychology Today, 96 percent of people think they are good listeners! Yet research shows most people only retain about HALF of what others say.
How critical is “active listening” as a professional skill? Of the 35 skills ranked in a Pew Research study, active listening came in at #1.
Companies and organizations are spending 80% of their corporate communications budgets on speaking. Think about it… time spent speaking doesn’t allow for listening.
I feel as though listening is a lost art, both professionally and personally.
One way to boost your listening skills is by… a-hem, listening to others on a more regular basis.
How can you do that?
May I offer a suggestion: Turn on your radio. Today is a great day to begin this new habit… today, August 20, is World Radio Day!
And of course, I’d be remiss if I didn’t suggest NPR and their network of stations across the country, including WITF Harrisburg and Lancaster. WITF’s radio transmitter is right outside the window by my desk where I’m blessed to work part-time.
While it won’t solve all the world’s communications problems, it just might help you improve your listening skills. As a bonus, you’re sure to learn lots of great news and facts… which can help improve your conversational skills—which involve speaking, listening and (here’s the end result… mic drop) *understanding.*
